EPS named the Right Choice for Cold Storage Applications. While urethane has long been considered the favored insulation for low-temperature applications, a closer look reveals that EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) is the Right Choice for Insulation: - EPS guarantees it's R-Value remains constant for 20 years. The R-Value is the amount of heat resistance a material has. The higher the R-Value, the greater the resistance. AK-Green Dot 225 high density guarantees its Design R-Value of 5.26/in for 20 years. On the other hand, some manufacturers of urethane state their "initial" R-Value is at about 7/15/in. Yet, their reported "aged" R-Value, based on only 180 days, is already down to 5.2/in (a drop of 28%) and this continues to drop. Simply put, EPS has the same R-value at the time of manufacturing as it does twenty years later.
- With EPS, you get more R-Value for your dollar. With EPS, you will not experience any energy use increases, because EPS guarantees its short and Long Term Thermal Resistance (LTTR) remains constant for 20 years.
- EPS has the advantage when resisting moisture. EPS has a closed cell structure with an outstanding moisture resistance for long term thermal performance in low temperature conditions. In fact, the lower the temperature, the higher it's R-value. Moisture infiltration is the biggest factor affecting walk-in freezer insulation performance. Once moisture is trapped within the insulation, the R-value begins to decrease rapidly. In resisting moisture and maintaining a constant R-value, using EPS is the key to saving energy dollars.
- Concerned with safety? With EPS you don't have to be. According to the Naval Engineering Standard (NES) a method that calculates a toxicity index based on 14 quantitatively determined combustion and/or thermal decomposition gases, the toxicity of EPS is 1.8 compared to urethane's 40.
- EPS's facts are clear. The Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) Trade Regulation Rule: Labeling and Advertising of Insulation, is designed to assist consumers in evaluating and comparing the long-term thermal performance characteristics of competing insulation products, such as urethane and extruded polystyrene. Since EPS is not affected by age, and remains stable over time, it is exempt from this ruling.
